What is listening?
Active listening is an important skill when working in groups.
Listening has four steps: receiving, attending, understanding and responding. Active listening requires concentration on what is being said without judgement. The ideal order of responding is:
Empathy: being able to get into another's shoes
Searching: constantly asking questions
Confrontation: asking critical questions
Advising: sharing what can be done
What is Response-style?
Responding is the skill of communicating accurate understanding of what the speaker has said. This is done by reflecting the speaker’s messages, feelings, and meanings. The terms ‘reflective listening’ and ‘responding’ are often used interchangeably.
‘Reflective listening is a particular way of responding to the thoughts and feelings communicated to us by another person, a technique which increases and communicates understanding.’
